The Beginners Guide To The Chakras

Hi everyone, in this post I will be writing about the 7 main chakras in the body and the importance of keeping them healthy

Sometimes our chakras can be unhealthy or blocked, this means that energy cannot run freely through them. When chakras are blocked this can cause physical or mental illnesses.

The word “chakra” translates to wheel in Sanskrit, this is because they are like moving wheels of energy in the physical body

Ok – lets get into it !

1. Root Chakra (Muladhara)

Location: In the perineum at the base of the spine

Colour: Red

Element: Earth

Age of resonance: Conception to 7

Sensory experience: Smell

Qualities: Patience, structure, stability, security, the ability to manifest your dreams

Spiritual activities: Noticing the perfection and beauty of the natural world

Musical note: C

The root chakra is located at the base of the spine and represents our foundation and being grounded

When the root chakra is healthy we feel confident in ourselves and our life, we have financial abundance and we feel a deep connection to the universe

When this chakra is blocked we can feel unstable, depressed and unfulfilled in life. We could also experience some lower back pain or weight issues

Some of the ways to unblock the root chakra include:

Standing bare foot on the earth, and visualise roots coming from your feet, into the ground – in other words grounding yourself

Exercising and moving the body, this can be running, dancing, doing housework or walking the dog

Yoga, yoga poses are an extremely powerful way to unblock chakras

Visualise the colour red, wear red clothes and eat red foods


2. Sacral Chakra (Swadhisthana)

Location: Below the navel and into the pelvis

Colour: Orange

Element: Water

Age of resonance: 7-14

Sensory experience: Taste Qualities: Well-being, sexuality, sensuality, pleasure, abundance

Spiritual activities: Meditation, celibacy, fasting

Musical note: D

The sacral chakra governs sexual energy and creativity. It help us to relate to out emotions and the emotions of others

When the sacral chakra is healthy we are creative, motivated, we have healthy relationships and we value ourselves

When the sacral chakra is blocked we have a lack of creativity, we feel low energy and unmotivated, we lack sexual energy and have emotional confusion

We may also experience physical symptoms such as constipation, urine infections and stomach cramps with a blocked and unhealthy sacral chakra

Some of the ways to unblock the sacral chakra include:

Meditating and visualising an orange light

Eating foods such as oranges, melons, coconuts and any other sacral chakra healing foods

Drinking plenty of water

Using healing crystals such as orange calcite, and citrine

Yoga poses for balancing the chakras

3. Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura)

Location: Directly below the sternum and over the stomach

Colour: Yellow

Element: Fire

Age of resonance: 14-21

Sensory experience: Vision

Qualities: Self worth, self-esteem, confidence, personal power, freedom of choice

Spiritual activities: Leadership, psychotherapy, appreciating solitude

Musical note: E

The Solar Plexus chakra connects with our ability to be confident and in control of our life. If you ever have butterflies on your stomach or a gut feeling, that is your third chakra as work

When the solar plexus is healthy we have confidence, we have a strong intuition and feel cheerful and optimistic

When the solar plexus is blocked we have lack of trust in ourselves and others, we have low self esteem and feel unfulfilled

We may experience physical symptoms such as acid reflux and nausea if this chakra is blocked

Some of the ways to unblock the solar plexus include:

Take a walk in the sunshine

De-clutter house, car and workplace

Wear yellow clothes and eat yellow foods

Do yoga poses for the chakras

Meditate and visualize the color yellow

4. Heart Chakra (Anahata)

Location: The middle of the chest

Colour: Green

Element: Air

Age of resonance: 21-28

Sensory experience: Touch

Qualities: Unity, brotherhood/sisterhood, love, peace, purity, innocence

Spiritual activities: Learning to love yourself first – then others, healing, singing

Musical note: F

The heart chakra is the middle chakra, between the lower chakras (material) and the high chakras (spiritual). When our heart chakra is healthy we can love ourselves unconditionally, love others whole heartedly and be in love with everything in the universe

When the heart chakra is blocked we can find it hard to love ourselves for who we really are, and may struggle to love others. We may hold grudges, struggle to commit and hold on to past hurts

Ways we can unblock the heart chakra include:

Meditate to unblock the chakra

Wear green or pink clothing

Repeat positive affirmations

Practice self love

Listen to healing music

5. Throat Chakra (Vishuddha)

Location: The internal and external throat

Colour: Blue

Element: Sound and music

Age of resonance: 28-35

Sensory experience: Hearing

Qualities: Communication, creativity, truthfulness, integrity

Spiritual activities: Chanting, fasting, yoga, tai chi

Musical note: G

The throat chakra gives a voice to the heart chakra, and gives us the ability to communicate our personal power. It allows us to express ourselves clearly to others

When our throat chakra is healthy we have a strong ability to communicate to others and express our views. You will also be able to listen to others and be present in their words

If we have a blocked throat chakra, we may feel that we cannot express ourselves properly or find the right words to say. We may feel lost for words

We could experience physical symptoms such as sinus inflammation, sore throats and earaches if the throat chakra is blocked

Ways we can unblock the throat chakra:


Wearing blue clothes

Doing a guided meditation

Using positive affirmations

Writing a journal

6. Third-Eye Chakra (Ajna)

Location: Between the eyebrows

Colour: Dark blue / Purple

Element: Light

Age of resonance: 35-42

Sensory experience: Mindful knowing / intuition

Qualities: Wisdom, imagination, knowledge

Spiritual activities: Thinking clearly about your life, reflection, meditation, visualising the life you want to attract

Musical note: A

The third eye gives the ability to see the bigger picture and connect to our intuition. It is the eye of the soul, it registers information beyond the surface level

When the third eye chakra is healthy we can experience good strong visualisations and intuitive hits, increased foresight and psychic visions

When the third eye chakra is blocked we may feel a lack of faith in our purpose, feel indecisive, and sometimes paranoia

We could experience physical symptoms such as headaches, light sensitivity or a dull sensation between the eyes if this chakra is blocked

Ways to unblock the third eye chakra:

Ground yourself with mindfulness

Get out in sunlight

Explore limiting beliefs

Eat blueberries, figs, prunes, purple kale, and other purple foods

Wear purple clothes

Use a sage smudge stick to cleanse the chakra

7. Crown Chakra (Samsara or Sahasrara)

Location: Top of the head

Colour: Violet / white

Element: Divine consciousness

Age of resonance: 42-49

Sensory experience: Bliss

Qualities: Grace, beauty, serenity, oneness with all that is

Spiritual activities: Prayer, meditation, reflection

Musical note: B

The crown chakra is located at the crown of the head and is represents our ability to be connected spiritually and to the divine

When the crown chakra is healthy we may experience states of higher consciousness, we feel connected to our higher self and we recognize the divine energy that guides us though life

If our crown chakra is blocked we may feel abandoned by the universe, inability to surrender to circumstances outside of our control and feel hopelessness

Physical symptoms of a blocked crown chakra can include a sore throat, thyroid problems, neck and shoulder stiffness and tension headaches

Ways to unblock the crown chakra include:

Using healing crystals such as clear quartz and selenite

Crown chakra meditations and yoga poses


Using positive affirmations

Drinking herbal teas

The Full Moon In Cancer – January 2020

So here we are again, the time of the full moon- the first one of 2020! However, this one isn’t just regular full moon

On Friday 10th January the moon will partially be covered by the earths shadow which is called a penumbral lunar eclipse. The name of the moon this month is a wolf moon, because wolfs can be heard howling at this time of year, and it is in the sign of cancer.

What can we expect from this moon?

  1. Elevated energy and vibration – this can be overwhelming so remember to ground yourself
  2. Ending of old cycles, new beginnings – have you been focusing your energy on things and are now experiencing them manifesting? me too!!
  3. Decoys – you may be having a few testers lately, just make sure you are on your path, don’t get distracted from your goals -stay focused
  4. Vivid Dreams – keep a dream journal, you may be getting messages in your dreams
  5. Connections to spirit – awareness of spiritual energies

Tips to stay focused in this cycle

  1. Trust yourself and the way you feel – let your intuition speak and lead the way
  2. Stay grounded – get those toes in that dirt girl 🙂
  3. Write your goals and desired state of being on paper and release them to the universe – trust the universe to provide
  4. Eat some fruit – let it keep your vibration elevated
  5. Be kind to yourself – do what ever feels right for you
